Bearded Brutes

Glitter beards and the men who wear them are so beautiful! This is not a trend and this is far from a gimmick. It's just only until now where this fashion statement and gender expression is gaining more visibility, challenging gender conformity within the non-conformity of this exquisiteness.

Mark Leeming and his "Bearded Brutes" series is as fabulous as all here that glitters.

From this series, these are my favorite:

Men and series like this rock my world!

Simply The Best

At 73, the legendary Tina Turner is the oldest woman ever to grace the cover of Vogue.

She's simply the best, not because of her age, not because of this cover, but because of who she is.

But how cool that in a day and age where as celebrity women get older, they're expected to just disappear, Tina is still here, and showing the world through Vogue that age is only just a number.

David Bowie Tribute: At The BRITs

THIS is how a Bowie tribute is done.
It wasn't a Las Vegas show. It wasn't about anyone on that stage. The spotlight was only about Bowie, about the man and his music. This tribute was humble, modest, poignant, and simple, hosted by the people that David knew, worked with, loved, and admired.
The BRITs did everything right with this. It was perfect.

Bravo to them all and to the Brit Awards for giving David the tribute that he deserved.

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Black Star...

The black star alphabet...isn't it beautiful?

I knew about this from the start, where underneath the giant black star is the six star segment that spells out B O W I E in this unique, stylized alphabet.

Like Bowie, we can be blackstars too!

Legacy of Legacies

Six weeks since David Bowie's passing, and there have been so many article tributes that it's almost dizzying to keep up with them. I've shared most of the best on my social networks, but this article that Iman herself shared on her page, I had to share here because of how beautiful this was written.

David left behind so many legacies. One of them was Bowie Bonds.

There's a life lesson here from Bowie to everyone.

"David Bowie’s well-planned trust and estate plan should serve as a lesson for everyone else. Take my advice, follow Bowie’s lead – plan ahead and don’t be afraid to be different — like the young bloke from Brixton. Whether you’re a downtown denizen or from a suburban town, get your Bowie on – create something special, preserve it and transfer it to your loved ones. Much love. I will miss you deeply, David." - Mark Martiak

The (Literal) Art of Collaboration

Björk, as usual, has a way of spoiling us, not only with her work, but the art behind the making of them. She doesn't give us a behind-the-scenes look into the making of her music videos that often, so when she does, it's as much a visual treat for the eyes as it is also for the heart.

Black Lake as how it was seen at the MoMA retrospect.

It feels like just yesterday that I saw this exhibit in person, where in that very unique and special theater, there were two opposites screens at the front of you and behind you, and each screen was a different perspective/point of view. Now, for the first time, two of the screens are in one place. It's  extraordinary seeing it in this format, where we can truly see the differences and the synchronicity.

And the concept art work behind Black Lake? Stunning. Gorgeous. Breathtaking.

This is the genius of Björk and Andrew Thomas Huang, the unity of two brilliant minds:

In the exclusive interview with The Creators Project, which is also as much of a treat as the behind-the-scenes look of the music video itself, I loved how Björk glowed about Andrew:

“I'm blessed with being connected to someone that talented, who not only can take on the emotional and the old school filmic element of things but is also incredibly savvy technically and always with the finger on the pulse when it comes to new gadgets. He is also one of those incredibly flexible, creative people who can take all my ideas and weave them into his own and his whole vision. Doesn’t have unnecessary ego getting in his way…”

Her mention of the "unnecessary ego" was gold. Yet again, she reminds us that yes: ego is unnecessary. One's talent is enough. And furthermore, as always in such warm Björk fashion, she reminds us that in art making as also in life, nobody should be working for anybody.

We should be working together.

How Do You Look?

Since way back in the 1940s and 1950s, skinny shaming has been as much a thing as it is now.

What I find the most said about this is -

All bodies in every shape, height, size, and weight is beautiful. So why can't the diversity of human bodies be loved, appreciated, and be seen as beautiful, as equal, as one and the same in that beauty?

With body positivity, it's not just about embracing plus-sized bodies. It's about embracing all bodies.

It's not called body POSITIVITY for nothing.

Body shaming of any kind is not cool.

Enough with the "real women are ____" mentality.

A plus-sized woman's beauty does not need to be validated by shaming skinny people first.

All bodies are beautiful.

"How do you look?"

Beautiful, just the way you are.

"What's freedom mean?"

There are many universal voices in the world, and Nina Simone was (and still is to me) one of them:

"What's freedom mean?"

"...No fear!"

Grandpa Bowie, Baby Jones

FINALLY, here's some good news for this beautiful family:

This is bittersweet. I instantly smiled at this at the same time when I was also heartbroken.

David was alive to know that he was going to be a granddad.

So sad, so tragic, that he didn't live to see his first grandchild.

I don't know if there is such thing as a heaven, but I'd like to think that there is, and that David will be able to see his first grandbaby from that place up high, smiling big and feeling proud as I can imagine Iman, Lexi, Duncan, and Rodene will be when that glorious day comes.

This may not be complete closure to not the loss of David Bowie who will always be with us, but to the death of David Jones, who we will never have back. But then again, soft and sweetly, it is.

This family's perseverance, resilience, courage, and strength in light of all the darkness is truly something inspiring - worth talking about, and most of all, worth remembering, xoxo.

RIP Teddy Antolin

I just heard of the news that the man, hairdresser, and friend, Teddy Antolin, who introduced David to Iman, essentially being the one responsible for bringing these two soulmates together, has passed away.

My thoughts are more than ever with Iman.

I guess David needed Teddy to do his hair in heaven!

Rest In Peace to these beautiful souls.

What a year 2016 has been so far. So many tragic losses of such immense talents, all so close together, all from one month alone. And now we're only into February...heaven needed more angels.
